KYVU will work with you and the provider institution offering the course to make sure you have what you need to get started. It is your job to decide if you have the discipline it takes to begin and complete a distance learning course. There is quite a bit of responsibility involved in taking courses online. Because you aren’t required to show up at a certain place at a certain time you have to make the commitment to make time for your course. Do you have access? Distance learning means that you can take your course from anyplace at anytime as long as you have a computer with access to the Internet. You will need to get to your course at least three times a week depending on the instructor. You should also plan to spend 2-3 hours working on your course each time you "go to class". Technologically speaking… For the most part, if you’ve found this page on the Internet and know how to use e-mail, you basically have all the technology skills you need. If you’re new to the Internet, it may take you a few days to get accustom to the software necessary to access your coursework. Typically instructors require that class assignments be submitted online. Therefore, being familiar with word processing and having good typing skills will be to your advantage prior to starting your course. Some instructors will also require a plug-in for delivery of some course content. A plug-in is simply a small piece of software installed on your computer that works with your internet browser. Plug-ins will allow your computer to play audio or video files or allow you to view a specific file like Adobe’s® Portable Document Format (PDF) .
