Program Description

This program prepares the student for entry into various professions within criminal justice. These include law enforcement, corrections, juvenile justice, private security and probation and parole. These occupations within criminal justice have evolved from jobs with minimal requirements to jobs requiring complex knowledge and skills. This curriculum gives the student theory, principles, and techniques employed by these criminal justice agencies. The study of organizations, social policies, and law as related to the operations of criminal justice organizations and their relationship to criminal behavior, society and social order comprise the curriculum. Graduates may seek multiple job opportunities in various criminal justice agencies on the federal, state, county, and municipal levels. Also, many industries and other private concerns now employ graduates skilled in security and protection. Those individuals who complete the degree while employed as a criminal justice practitioner will find that their ability to acquire desired assignments and promotion within their organization are greatly enhanced.

The graduate can demonstrate an understanding of the nature, function, and scope of criminal justice ideas, issues, and programs. The graduate can also identify and demonstrate the abilities needed to supervise and manage various aspects of a police, corrections, or security and loss prevention agency.

The University of Louisville offers the Bachelor of Science in Justice Administration degree online in cooperation with KCTCS and KYVC. The Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice-Law Enforcment Option degree, delivered online by KCTCS, prepares students for completion of the program through the University of Louisville.
