The Leadership, Foundation and Human Resource Education (ELFH) department in the College and Education and Human Development at the University of Louisville offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Workforce Leadership (formerly Occupational Training and Development). This is a “completer degree”; it assists adults who have prior college credits and work learning to obtain a degree. A feature of this program is the Specialization Component, in which students may obtain up to 48 hours of college credit at no cost for documented learning from work experiences (beyond entry level) in a teachable occupation. Through a validation process, learning from training in a given field, technical course work from accredited institutions, IT and other technical certifications, as well as military, vocational and occupational experience may be converted into college credit. The program major includes 35 credit hours that develop knowledge and skill in workplace training and performance. General Education and elective courses comprise the remainder of the 123 credit hour program.

The Workforce Leadership major targets needs of the urban community workforce, as well as military and civilian personnel. “Training the Trainer” and strategies to improve workforce performance are emphasized. Graduates of this program apply their expertise in entry to mid-level positions, sometimes in Human Resources, Workforce Development, or Training departments, but often in work situations where they are called upon to assist others in improving job performance. Students learn to plan curriculum, design and deliver adult training, and evaluate learning and its impact. They develop skills to manage projects and events, to use knowledge management systems, to support change, and to lead performance improvement initiatives. The culminating course asks them to apply and evaluate program learning in an on-the-job experience. Information Technology certification prep courses are available as electives.
The Associate of Applied Science degree in General Occupational Training Studies (GOTS) is offered in cooperation with UofL, KCTCS and KYVU. This associates degree may offer some students a foundation to build on as they prepare to enter the Bachelor of Science in Workforce Leadership.
