Program Description

An effort is underway to place the current KCTCS Associate of Applied Science Degree in Fire/Rescue Technology into a distance learning format by mid-to-late 2010. The plans for the program consist of both online coursework and hands-on skills practice at various locations around the Commonwealth. Online degree credit courses began in January 2008 and each semester new courses will be added until the program is available in its entirety. In addition to AAS Degree in Fire/Rescue Science Technology, all or part of the certificate programs in: Basic Firefighter (Firefighter I), Advanced Firefighter (Firefighter II), Fire Officer, and Emergency Medical Technician will also be available. Several of the Fire/Rescue courses will also apply toward the new Homeland Security/Emergency Management Associate’s Degree Program. The curriculum in the Fire/Rescue Science Technology degree program is organized to provide a solid base level of knowledge and skills that the firefighter of the 21st Century must possess to be a part of an effective emergency response team. A graduate from this program will possess the knowledge and skills that meet or exceed that specified by: NFPA 1001, Firefighter I and II, Kentucky Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic, OSHA 1910.120 at the Hazardous Materials Awareness, Operations, and Technician Levels.

Admission Requirements

For admission into the degree program, a High School Diploma/GED and a score of 69 on the COMPASS test is required. Previous or concurrent experience as a firefighter is helpful to the overall learning experiences of students in this program.

Residency & Activity Requirements

Required Activities:
Courses that require hands-on skills practice are denoted in the ECTC Schedule. Some may require travel to a State Fire/Rescue Training facility. Students will receive additional information upon enrollment into a course.
