Sample ePortfolio

Overview

When you register for any course, you are eligible to use the KY ePortfolio to compile the results of your individual development plan. KY ePortfolio is a personal learning space that helps you document your education, both inside and outside of the classroom; it also helps you track your performance so that you can set better goals and achieve them. All of this is accomplished by keeping a repository of your work and accomplishments, and providing a place for self-reflection and self-expression. You are the owner of your KY ePortfolio, which gives you the freedom to add, modify, and create many different types of work inside of your portfolio. Once you have begun building your KY ePortfolio, you can choose to share pieces of your KY ePortfolio with particular audiences such as potential employers, mentors, or family. The KY ePortfolio, though, is your private space; only those parts of your portfolio that you choose to share will be available to others and only to those you choose.

Accessing ePortfolio through Angel

You can access your KY ePortfolio from your ANGEL My Page. Click on the link in the My Page options from your ANGEL My Page. When you are in ANGEL, your KY ePortfolio is available anytime from the list of options under the My Page link. If you cannot see the list of choices, click the gray arrow beside My Page. When you click on ePortfolio, your KY ePortfolio will appear in a new window. The personal information will be imported from your ANGEL account into KY ePortfolio. Updates you make to your personal information in KY ePortfolio will not affect your personal information in ANGEL.

Building an ePortfolio with Objectives and Artifacts

The objectives section allows you to measure what you have learned against a defined set of goals. An objective is a grouping of learning goals that you wish to achieve. There are three types of objectives: public, which may be added by administrators; course, which are created by instructors for individual courses; and personal, which you create for your own personal use. When you first enter this section, it will list any goals that you have already made progress on by submitting an artifact. To complete an objective, KY ePortfolio helps you link an artifact to a goal as evidence that you are making progress towards the objective. When you click on an objective, you are presented with your artifacts. After choosing which artifact meets that objective, you must rate yourself on that objective and provide reflection about how this goal was or was not achieved by this particular artifact.

The Artifacts section of KY ePortfolio allows you to create, import, export and maintain your Artifacts. An artifact is any evidence of an event or activity in your life. Artifacts could be course or work assignments, photos, video clips, letters, or many other types of evidence. You can create artifacts by uploading files, by pointing to a URL, or by importing the Artifact from ANGEL. If you choose to import an artifact from ANGEL, you will be given a list of your recently graded dropbox submissions based on your current ANGEL courses. After completing the import process, you will notice that the Artifact is locked from editing. This makes the artifact a Certified Artifact, an artifact that has a grade, instructor’s comments, and other metadata such as course information, that cannot be edited.

On the left side of the artifacts view, you can use folders to organize your artifacts. As your KY ePortfolio grows in size, you can use folders to maintain structure in your KY ePortfolio or to group similar artifacts together. Artifacts can be moved from folder to folder by selecting the artifact and dragging it into the new folder. The artifacts area also allows you to comment or reflect on each artifact in your portfolio, or to view others’ comments about artifacts that you have shared with them. To do this, click on the “Comments” link for an individual artifact. To view or reflect upon a learning objective for an artifact, click on the objectives link for an individual artifact.

Finally, you can export your artifacts from KY ePortfolio, so that your evidence becomes portable, traveling with you from institution to institution or from one software system to another. This export is a zip file of all of your artifacts, and it includes an IMS Manifest, allowing other educational software to import the artifacts easily.

Making Publications in KY ePortfolio

Publications allow you to share all or part of your KY ePortfolio with others. Publications are the end product of the ePortfolio process. You can create as many Publications as you want, and you can make these publications public, or hide them behind a password that you share only with certain individuals.

After setting the options on your Publication, click on the “Design” mode of the publication. The design mode is where you create the look and feel of the publication page. On the left, you will have all of the current items in your ePortfolio, and on the right, you will see the layout of the ePortfolio, based on the template you selected in the Publication settings. When you click on an item, you will be prompted to select where you want to place the item on your publication, and also may be given other options to show or hide pieces of the item for this particular view. These options allow you to control the look and feel of your KY ePortfolio publication.

Inside the design view, you also have the ability to use the “HTML Text Control”, which allows you to use the same HTML Editor as ANGEL to create dynamic content for your KY ePortfolio publication. Using the HTML Editor will allow you to personalize your publication for particular audiences or to enhance your publication with graphics, designs, and formats not available in standard text.

Finally, you can “Send” a publication to others, by clicking the “Send” link. The Send page will display an editable template-based email that you can send to invite others to visit your publication. This allows you to easily share your KY ePortfolio publication with others in the KYVAE learning community.

Using Blogs with ePortfolio

The blog section of KY ePortfolio is an area where you can create blogs or journals to document your thoughts and experiences. You can have as many blogs as you want on a variety of topics, and you can add as many entries to a blog as you wish. It is important to remember that your blogs are private, unless you choose to share them by adding them to a publication. This means you can create private, personal blogs that you don’t share with anyone. The HTML Editor is available within the blog area to allow you to create dynamic blog entries.

One important use of blogs is to reflect on your professional development and learning. Reflecting on your learning will help reinforce the learning you do and help with long-term retention of material. Reflecting often on your learning will also provide you with a record of your personal and professional growth.

Reviewing some ePortfolio Terms

The following are a few of the key terms that you should know when developing your KY ePortfolio:

Artifacts – An artifact is any evidence of an event or activity in your life such as course assignments, photos, video clips, letters, or many other types of evidence.

Blog – short for Web Log, a Blog is a collection of personal reflections like a journal.

History – in the KY ePortfolio, your history is much like your resumé, a summary of your educational and professional background.

My Info – Your personal information. Use care when providing your personal information publicly.

My Page – in KY ePortfolio as in ANGEL, your initial Start Page is the My Page.

Objective – An objective is a group of learning goals that you wish to achieve. In KY ePortfolio, there are three types of objectives: public, which may be added by KYVAE administrators; course, which are created by instructors for individual courses; and personal, which you create for your own personal use.

Publication – All or a portion of your artifacts, blogs, or history that you share with the public or with selected individual.
